About:

H. Frank Carey High School’s varsity football program teamed up with the Think Pink club to “Pink Out” for Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Oct. 7.

Not only did the Seahawks defeat Mepham, 15-12, in a back-and-forth battle, but the Dad’s Club graciously helped defer the cost of the pink shirts purchased to commemorate the day, helping to raise $2,500. The Think Pink club will utilize the proceeds to help alleviate stresses in the lives of breast cancer patients and survivors.

This was the second year the wonderful event was made possible through the combined efforts of the Think Pink club, advised by Gina Samet, and the varsity football team led by head coach Michael Stanley.

“It was a great day for everyone to get the message out about breast cancer awareness and early detection, especially to our younger generation,” Samet said. “The best protection is early detection.”

“The team embraced the opportunity to contribute to this great cause,” Stanley said. “The members of the team sold T-shirts before and after the event and wore the shirts in school to promote the occasion and awareness.”

The Pirettes also held their annual Pee Wee Clinic during the event. Approximately two-dozen children worked with the Pirettes to learn a routine that they performed at halftime.

A special thanks to all who collaborated and participated in what the school hopes to be the first of many successful “Pink Out” events. Mrs. Samet and the Think Pink club extend their gratitude to the Dad’s Club, custodial staff, the administration, Mr. Michael Cartolano, Mrs. Alexandra Andrade, Mr. Michael Stanley and Mr. Thomas Aiello for all their assistance and support in planning this year’s event!
